LUNCHTIME POLITICS: Abbott in Texas – Cuomo in New York – Georgia Senate – Tuesday Trivia

Your Daily Polling Update for Tuesday, March 16

BIDEN JOB APPROVAL: AVERAGE 55%

RON’S COMMENT: Today’s average is based on five polls, ranging from 52% (Rasmussen) to 59% (Politico). Biden’s disapproval rating averages 41% today (+1 from last average).

SENATE: GEORGIA 2022

Among voters statewide

General Election
Herschel Walker (R) over Sen. Raphael Warnock (D): +2 (48-46)
Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) over Doug Collins (R): +1 (46-45)
Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) over Kelly Loeffler (R): +5 (46-41)

3-Way Republican Primary
Herschel Walker (R): 33%
Doug Collins (R): 33%
Kelly Loeffler (R): 24%

2-Way Republican Primary
Doug Collins (R): 52%
Kelly Loeffler (R): 32%

2-Way Republican Primary
Herschel Walker (R): 50%
Doug Collins (R): 36%

2-Way Republican Primary
Herschel Walker (R): 62%
Kelly Loeffler (R): 26%

RON’S COMMENT: Looks like football legend Walker, a Trump favorite, would be a formidable Senate candidate if he would run. He has a favorable rating in the state of 81%. Walker played college ball for the Univ. of Georgia and won the 1982 Heisman Trophy before his USFL/NFL career (1983-97)…. At this point, Loeffler, who was appointed to the Senate by Gov. Brian Kemp and lost the 2020 general election to Warnock, trails all primary match-ups…. Many local pols think Collins will run against Kemp for governor in the GOP primary…. Kemp’s job rating is 33% approve/53% disapprove.

NEW YORK: GOV. ANDREW CUOMO

Among voters statewide

Cuomo personal rating
Favorable: 43%
Unfavorable: 45%

RON’S COMMENT: Cuomo’s favorable rating is 59% among Democrats, 15% among Republicans, 38% among independents, 42% among men and 44% among women.

Cuomo re-election
If Andrew Cuomo runs for re-election as governor in 2022, as things stand now, would you vote to re-elect Cuomo or would you prefer someone else?

Re-elect Cuomo: 34%
Prefer someone else: 52%
Don’t know: 14%

RON’S COMMENT: The Cuomo Dichotomy––most New York voters don’t want him to resign (35% favor resignation, 50% oppose it), but they don’t want him to be re-elected, either (34% favor re-election, 52% prefer someone else). By party: 40% of Democrats, 83% of Republicans and 50% of independents do not want Democrat Cuomo to be re-elected…. From the Siena poll report:

  • “By 48-34 percent, [voters] say [Cuomo] can continue to effectively do his job as governor.”
  • “One-third of voters say that Cuomo has committed sexual harassment, one-quarter say he has not, and a plurality are unsure. Voters are satisfied with the way Cuomo has addressed the allegations, 57-32 percent….”
  • “Voters approve of Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic, 60-33 percent, virtually unchanged from 61-34 percent last month. Voters give Cuomo positive grades on four specifics related to the pandemic – communicating, providing accurate information, reopening plans, and managing the vaccine rollout – however, when it comes to making COVID-related nursing home death data public, voters give Cuomo a negative grade, 27-66 percent.”

TEXAS: GOV. GREG ABBOTT

Among voters statewide

Abbott Job Rating
Approve: 52%
Disapprove: 43%

RON’S COMMENT: Abbott’s job rating is still in positive territory, but it’s declining. In early February, he was 59% approve/32% disapprove. From the Morning Consult poll report on why Republican Abbott’s ratings have shifted:

  • “…Abbott’s standing with independent voters has taken a hit in recent weeks: Between the start of the winter crisis and Abbott’s repeal of COVID-19 restrictions, his job approval rating among independents fell 6 points, to 48 percent, and dropped another 7 points, to 41 percent, after he announced his executive action on the pandemic. The latest survey found 52 percent of Texas independents disapprove of the governor’s job performance, up 20 points since early February.”
